What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is a science-based, personalised, preventative approach looking at the fundamental underlying causes of clinical symptoms. It focuses on the root cause of the disease, while traditional western medicine places its focus on treating the symptoms.

Functional medicine practitioners want to find out what is causing that individual to have those symptoms, we look at what’s happened/happening to identify triggers. Which can help us find out what is creating the problem in the first place.

When we find this information out, we can use a set of tools in a strategic way to unravel the complexities of chronic symptoms or illnesses. then we can work with that. It is a simple case of cause and effect, if you treat the cause, you will see an effect on the symptoms of that cause.

Instead of just labelling the disease or current symptom’s, we want to understand the underlying cause, this way, we have more options going forward for that person’s health.

Functional medicine looks at you as an individual on a whole-body approach.

Things we look at -

  • Genetics

  • Systems biology

  • Hormones

  • Cellular biology

  • Toxicology

  • Nutrition

  • Lifestyle

  • Psychology

and much more.

Once we identify the triggers and causes, your functional practitioner can start to create a customised road map to a better health.

Your plan will focus on things such as, nutrition, exercise, lifestyle, and better sleep. It will also focus in on your mental, physical, and emotional health too. Giving you all the right tools and knowledge to be able to manage your symptoms.

50% of adults will have suffered or are still suffering with a chronic illness and functional medicine is here to help. As a functional medicine practitioner, myself and others want to encourage our clients to take an active role in their own health. We want to educate clients on their own bodies. So, they have a better understanding and will be successful in living a healthier life.
